That said, if you plan on using your PC to control the music instead of your cellphone or tablet, you'll have the complete suite of Creative's controls at your fingertips.īut playing audio is only one half of the Roar's capabilities, it's a halfway decent recording device, too. Acoustic songs could've used a bit tweaking, and some of my favorite tracks like "I Will Wait" by Mumford & Sons comes off slightly flatter and more two-dimensional than I would like.
The only time the Roar let me down was when I went into the Sound Blaster app and found that I couldn't customize the sound on the speaker, like I've done for Creative products in the past. After several conversations with the development team, it's clear they're not trying to emulate Beats's uncontrollable urge for bass or chasing after highs at the expense of the rest of the system. About seven trips in my bag later, however, I'm happy to report that my worst fears didn't come true.Ĭreative covers the entire audio spectrum well, but does a particularly good job with pronounced mids.

I often had the fear that a rogue item in my bag might jut into them, ruining any chance I had at listening to "Sail" by AWOLNATION in its full bass-heavy glory ever again. There's a give to them, and they can be manually depressed if you push in on the sides. Spin it left or right, and you'll find either radiator that's responsible for the excellent bass. You'll also find the the NFC chip under the top right corner that you can use with any NFC-equipped cellphone for rapid pairing.

On top, there's a grille that keeps the three drivers safe and sound, as well as a slew of control buttons that turn the speaker on and off, raise/lower the volume and pair it to your Bluetooth device. AThe device provided to techradar by Creative for review is jet black and all business, though it does come in white – if that's more your style. This mode plays music from the microSD card for a specified amount of time (15 or 30 minutes), and slowly fades the music out before shutting down, once you're sleeping peacefully. I guess this could be good for those late-night cram sessions. Basically, when enabled, this sounds a loud alarm-type noise at random intervals to make sure the user is "awake." Setting 1 sounds the alarm at 3/4 volume, while setting 2 blares it as loud as possible.
If you need to grab the attention of everyone around, then this is the way to do it. If you enable the alarm on the back of the ROAR, then hit the "alarm" button for three seconds, this thing starts screaming. It's not very good for recording music or the like. The quality isn't the best, but I guess it could get the job done in a pinch if you needed to take a quick voice reminder or something. Like the AXX 200, the ROAR can record audio directly to a microSD card. So, this normally wouldn't be noted as a "unique" feature, but this ROAR can be charged over its proprietary port or the microUSB port. Here's a quick rundown of the speaker's more unique features (or ones that aren't necessarily self-explanatory from the above list): "Loud Sounds" mode that sends a loud "alarm" occasionally to keep users awake and focused Like its little brother, the ROAR has a ton of unique features:Įmergency Alarm – crazy-loud alarm, in case of evil That's a ton of stuff packed into one speaker.
The back houses all the microSD controls and ports: charging, aux-in, external USB port (for charging devices), microUSB in, microSD card slot, recording, track controls, and alarm. The top of the unit is where you'll find the Bluetooth controls: NFC pairing, battery status, pairing mode/speakerphone, volume, the ROAR feature (more on that below), and power. When it comes to buttons, the ROAR has them in spades (much like the AXX 200).
